Marla's Journal

April 17th 2006

Sorry it's been so long since my last entry! Things have certainly been busy!
Thanx again to all of you who bought Grateful...the support means the world to me! We are still trying to get the word out so please tell your friends and add me on myspace!!

OK...lets address the Stuff magazine cover for a second. Many of you have emailed me regarding this and I want to clear it up so you don't keep waiting for my behind to appear in your mailbox.
After much consideration, I decided to pull out of the whole thing. I have been acting for most of my life and I have NEVER ONCE gone the sexy route.
I have always stayed true to who I am and this Stuff cover did not feel like me. I thought I could pull it off...but it just felt so wrong. It starts with a sexy magazine cover and then before you know it...you weigh 80 pounds & wear oversized glasses. I just can't do it. I hope you all understand.

My cd is FINALLY in!!!! I can’t believe it’s actually done and ready to be shipped!! This is your chance to help me promote it and make it a huge hit so I can tour and possibly start another record,

PLEASE forward this website to your friends and have them order a copy and add me on their myspace page.

Thanks so much to all of you who patiently waited for GRATEFUL to be completed. Your support means the world to me!!

If you haven’t ordered your cd please do. The first 500 are autographed and will hopefully wind up being collectors because of a printing mistake. (Please don’t email me asking if I really signed them…I sat down and autographed every single one by myself. I PROMISE!)

January 2nd 2006

Hey guys!!! Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season!

I just got back from Hawaii and I had the best time! I got a nasty flu the first day I got there but I refused to let it ruin my trip so I pulled through. My birthday was awesome and thank you to everyone who sent me those sweet bday wishes. It really meant a lot to me.

A couple of updates for you:

-I’m having a pre-record release party at the Mint in LA on Saturday, January 28th. If any of you are in the Los Angeles area I hope you can make it! I’m going to be playing with my full band and I will be taking orders for the CD so you will receive it in the mail as soon as it’s available. (Any minute now I SWEAR!!!!!) More details to come…if you want info on this show sign up for the email list on my homepage.

-I’m also going to be on the cover of Stuff magazine for the March issue. I’m super psyched about this because they are going to let me pose with one of my Kiss My Axe guitar straps! I’m hoping this helps spread the word about my little project;) I haven’t been too happy about not eating carbs to get ready for the shoot…I’m cranky without bread. I’m going to eat ice cream for days after I shoot this damn thing!

-I have finally come to a decision on a name for the record! It’s going to be called “Grateful” which is one of my favorite songs on the cd.

I wish you all the best in 2006!!!

Marla

Hey guys-
Many of you have emailed me regarding song downloads and I finally have an answer!
Go to www.indie911.com and put Marla Sokoloff in the search bar. You will then be directed to my page where you can download my 5 song demo for 99 cents a song!

I think this is a very good solution till the record comes out in 2009. j/k

Thank you to everyone who submitted some of the most beautiful artwork I have ever seen!!! It was not easy to pick a winner…but after much consideration (and many sleepless nights) I have decided that Adam Graniss of rock child productions http://www.rockchild.net will be the lucky guy. Thank you Adam!!!!!

October 8, 2005

Just got back from Toronto and I’m quite glad to be back. I loved it there…but there is nothing better than coming home!

So I need some help….i’m in the process of doing the artwork for my upcoming record and I’m completely useless in that department. The cover is going to be a pic of me but I want it to have a cool theme around it so it’s a little more interesting than me just standing there! (think the new Sheryl Crow record Wildflowers)
I have nothing designed for the back cover so far..

If any of you are artists please email me and I will send you the cover photo for you to design around. (marla@marlasmusic.com)
The deadline for submissions is November 1st and the winner will get their name in the credits, advance copies of the cd, and a really big hug from me! (Ok..i know the prizes are totally lame but we’re doing it for the love of music people!)
Good luck!

Hey guys-
I’m currently filming a TV movie called Christmas In Boston in Toronto. I absolutely love this city! I have filmed in Canada a million times and always really enjoy myself here.
Being an actor can be such a strange existence because we are often left to entertain ourselves. I am alone in a city where I know no one, so I must spend some quality time with myself and find some interesting activities to do. Tonight I saw Just Like Heaven and it was so sweet. (I would never go to the movies on a Saturday night alone in LA, but I enjoy taking myself on dates when on location!) Mark Ruffalo is to die for, and Reese Witherspoon gave a touching and flawless performance as usual. One of my favorite things to do is get some popcorn and bawl my eyes out!!!
I also have been doing some research on new music…I seriously can’t listen to the radio anymore!! I came across this singer/songwriter named Kate Earl and can’t stop listening to her. Her music is very soothing and beautifully written. Get her record Fate Is The Hunter ASAP!! I’m also enjoying The Like and the new Death Cab For Cutie.
I have no music news at the moment; I just wanted to check in! Also, if you ordered a CD please expect a short delay in delivery…I can’t mail anything till mid-oct when I return to Los Angeles.

Marla

Today I have a heavy heart.
I can't stop watching the news...i can't stop looking at all the devestation.

Last summer I was lucky enough to film a movie in New Orleans. I keep thinking about how dreadful the summer heat and humidity was...and i'm sure that heat is only adding to the fresh hell they are living in.
It's so unbelievable that the BIG EASY is gone. The old jazz vibe and stinky streets of the French Quarter are under water and will take years to be up and running again. It's almost unimaginable.
My thoughts are prayers are with every single person affected by Katrina.

For the past month I have been preparing for the debut of Kiss My Axe at the MTV Video Music Awards.
I was invited to Miami so I could gift celebrities (mostly musicians) custom-made guitar straps. In exchange, they would take a cute picture holding my strap for press. (As you may or may not know, celebrities pay for nothing. I was really looking forward to exacerbating the whole rich people getting free stuff phenomenon)
I sewed my head off day and night and even had cool picks made with my logo on it!
I woke up Thursday morning to the horrible news…
My flight was cancelled due to the pending hurricane and no flights would be leaving all day.
All flights today were booked. Arrrr!
What moron decided to have an award show during hurricane season in freaking Florida? Is it really that important to have P. Diddy enter the “white” carpet on a yacht?
As you can tell I’m quite frustrated that I missed the chance to give Kelly Clarkson a guitar strap.
Thanx for listening to my rant!

July 22nd 2005

I got an interesting email from a fan that I wanted to share with you guys. I’m not going to print their name because I’m going to respect his or her privacy.

I apologize in advance if this pisses someone off…but I figured this is my journal and I felt compelled to post it. Plus, it’s a nice change from the average journal entry.

I am one of those people who believe it’s not cool to push your beliefs onto someone else. I always find it frustrating when celebrities get on their soapbox and preach religion or politics. Don’t they understand that it’s their job to entertain, not to sell me their church or who their favorite candidate for president is?!?

So when I got this email the other day regarding the song Beautiful Life… I was a little bugged.
Here are the lyrics to the first verse of Beautiful Life. You can find the email regarding these lyrics below.

Beautiful Life
God won’t talk to me
I guess she’s pretty busy lately
I’d like to believe
She’s listening…

***I only have one issue and that is with the song "Beautiful Life" where God is referred to as a "she".
To make it more simple I would just say that sticking with the Biblical gender for God Himself seems a more honest and accurate portrayal of who He is.
I think God's instruction to treat our wives as the queens of the household and putting them above ourselves when regarding their needs would suffice to say that just because God is a He does not mean He doesn't completely embrace His creation of women. The reference to God as a she seems to be coming from an inner discomfort with man and not a respect for the love, kindness, thoughtfulness, maturity, completeness, beauty and power God gives women.
Please don't see this as a personal critique and please keep doing what you do. ***

*Per the author’s request, I did not see this as a personal critique.

Thanx for reading:) Feel free to email me with any comments:

Hope this finds you all well!!! I know I have been totally sucking at keeping this journal updated…please forgive me!

Thanx to everyone who came out to the Hotel Café show!!! I love the intimacy of that venue. I hope some of you stayed for Josh Radin..his set was incredible.
I currently have no shows coming up due to a new series that I am starting. It’s called “Modern Men” and will be on the WB next year.
I’m planning on writing my butt off while I’m in my trailer so I can hook you all up with some new tunes!
Look out for the August issue of Women’s Wear Daily …they are doing a feature on Kiss My Axe!

March 19, 2005

I just returned from Austin Texas where I was playing the South By Southwest music conference. I had the best time and heard some truly talented musicians. The vibe there was so inspiring!
Last night on my walk home to my hotel I saw Mary Lou Lord playing acoustic on the street corner and my friend was in line behind Robert Plant at the local coffee house! I saw Tracy Bonham play her ass off and my friend Inara George had the crowd covered in goose bumps during her sold out set. I highly recommend you guys check her out -www.inarageorge.com

My show was awesome but I have to admit the audience wasn’t as supportive as LA. SXSW is filled with industry dudes who find their blackberries more interesting than music. We played a short acoustic set in this cool little bar called Momo’s. I got a chance to meet some of the artists that were featured on the bill with me and they were so freaking cool. I suggest you go to www.indie911.com and download them ASAP. (Shiny Toy Guns, Grace Potter, Amanda Ghost, Samantha Stollenwerck)

My guitar straps are featured in the April issue of Jane magazine! I am so psyched about the attention they are getting. If you know any guitar players who are in need of a strap send them my way.
Thanx to all of you who came out for the Viper Room show on the 3rd …I am truly grateful for the support. Don’t forget to tell your friends to sign up for the mailing list on the homepage!
Stay tuned for more show updates.
If any of you have some ideas for where I should play next (California only sorry!) send me an email marla@marlasmusic.com

Welcome to my first journal entry for my brand new website. I know it’s long overdue but it’s better late than never right?? I’m so psyched to finally have a way to connect with my fans and keep you all in the know!

This website promises to keep you updated on gigs, press and new music posted regularly. Marlasmusic.com is also the home of Kiss My Axe guitar straps. Now you can finally have the guitar strap of your dreams just by sending me an email. Each strap is custom made just for you! (For more info, click on Kiss My Axe)

Right now I’m in the studio finishing up a new song called "Everything I’m Looking For." I’m really excited about this one -- for once it’s not an angry breakup song! Last month my band and I played a show for indie 911 (www.indie911.com) at the Viper Room. Even though our opening act was a fellow named Cock Lorge (yes, you read that right) we still had an awesome time.

Thanx so much for all your support and please keep checking in for more information! If you have any questions or comments please email marla@marlasmusic.com Xo, Marla
